Buying a used Boat

When buying a used boat here are some key questions we advise you to ask the broker:

  • Is the brokerage a member of an association that requires its members to adhere to a code of practice? For example the BMF, BRBA or ABYA?
  • Does the brokerage operate a properly administered designated client account, and will your monies be kept in this account during the brokerage transaction?
  • Is there marine finance on the boat? If so, what are the detailed arrangements for payment and discharge of it prior to completion?
  • What title documentation will be provided eg Part 1 Registration, Boat Builders Certificate, Bill of Sale, RCD compliance, proof of VAT-paid status. Can you view these documents in advance of completion?
  • At what stage do you become responsible for the boat and liable for the payment of insurance and mooring fees?
  • What are the arrangements for completion eg payment of monies, handover of keys and title documentation?

Contracts

  • Is the brokerage using an approved standard contract such as the standard BMF/ABYA agreements?
  • Is the contract subject to sea trial and survey? – this is strongly recommended in all used boat purchases
  • Does the contract contain a specification or inventory?

Post purchase

  • Will the brokerage arrange for a transfer of the registration to your name?
  • Can the broker suggest any qualifications / training that you can embark on?
