Head of the River Race Boat Race

Details

The Head of the River is one of London's longest running sporting traditions. Every spring, up to 400 crews from all around the world take to the River Thames to compete in this historic boating event.

First raced in 1926, The Head of the River Race (HORR) was conceived as a way for crews to practice long rows during winter, in preparation for the summer regatta. This annual event now sees hundreds of boats, each manned by eight crew, row over the 4.25 mile (6.8km) course from Mortlake to Putney. Tradition dictates that the previous year's winner to starts first and they are followed at 10-second intervals by the other crews in finishing order before the new entries start in alphabetical order.

The event is a great way to celebrate the start of spring - come down to the banks of London's picturesque River Thames and cheer on the crews.
